Yes, your eyes are not deceiving you, we said Rat Café!
The Trend for Animal Cafes
Animal cafes are trending worldwide. The phenomenon began with cat cafes and their popularity has spurned several unusual establishments featuring a variety of animals including an owl café in Japan. If you have yet to visit one, these eateries and coffee shops offer you the opportunity to imbibe whilst enjoying the company of the resident animals.
Needless to say, there has been a certain amount of controversy over the welfare of the animals which inhabit the cafes. However, most of the establishments appear to have the animals’ best interest at heart and restrict the time that they spend interacting with customers.
Naturally, most of the café’s feature cute and cuddly creatures. But Merlin Entertainments have come up with a novel version of the concept and will feature a new kind of animal café at the San Francisco and London Dungeons this summer. The Rat Cafés will be themed pop-up ventures and will enable visitors to the Dungeons to enjoy a bite to eat and a coffee with rats!
Rats rather divide opinion, even amongst animal lovers, so you could view the cafés as risky enterprises. However, they will only be open for a couple of days and the novelty value should see them attract many enthusiastic customers. The rat theme is certainly in keeping with the Dungeon attractions’ general ambiance!
The Rat Café experience, and we are sure that it will be an experience, is set to open 1 July and 8 July in San Francisco and 24 June in London. With tickets starting at £39 these are not cheap places to get a cappuccino. But then you can’t actually buy a cappuccino because the cafés are offering rattucinos instead. These will be joined on the inventive menu by rattes, car-rat cake and ratatouille. If this all sounds like great fun then you need to book in advance to ensure that you snaffle a place.
Apparently, the resident rodents will be very friendly! If you have concerns over the rats’ enjoyment of the enterprise or hygiene in the café, fear not! Rats are intelligent and sociable creatures who love interaction and they clean themselves regularly. They will be under the care of experienced rat keepers to ensure that all is well.
If the pop-up events prove to be popular then maybe rat cafes will become permanent features of the Dungeon attractions. They would definitely be a great way to discover your rat mojo, if you have one!
