Do Dogs Know When You’re Pregnant?

Dogs / Monday, July 24th, 2017

When you are expected and you’ve got a bump starting to show, it’s interesting to see how pets react. If you’ve got a dog, you may be wondering what they make of this new bump, and whether they have any sense or understanding of what’s inside your belly. Well, dogs are pretty incredible, and they can probably pick up on more than you know.

So, do dogs know when you’re knocked up?

In a way, yes. They will be able to pick up on things that will tell them something is different, and the might know there’s something living inside you, but we’ve got no idea what their understanding of that is. They could be thinking hang on a second, something’s different here, but I’m not sure what it is yet, but they soon find out when the baby arrives. Some dogs have also been known to figure out that their owners are pregnant before they even know themselves.

Here are ways can detect when you are pregnant…

Change in mood, movement and body language

Dogs have been accustomed to interpreting our body language, and often, they hang on our every move. Pregnant women obviously move and behave differently. For example, they might walk differently, and struggle to do certain things, which your dog may or may not pick up on. Dogs can also be very sensitive to our moods, and as we all know, pregnant women experience a whirlwind of hormonal effects, which sometimes changes their behaviour. So when you’re a little bit grumpy, Fido just might notice that something’s up.

Change in odour

You might be surprised to learn that when a woman becomes pregnant, she will have a slight change in smell which dogs can often detect. This is due to body chemistry changes and hormones. Dogs have a much better sense of smell than we do, so they tend to pick up on the tiniest of changes in odour.

A change in routine

WHen you’re pregnant, your routine will most likely change. Dogs love to follow a set routine, and can feel a little off balance if anything changes. For example, you could be sleeping in longer, or waking up a lot in the night. And when you leave work near your due date, you will be spending more time at home than usual.

Can they hear it?

As the foetus grows and develops organs, thanks to your dog’s amazing hear, there’s every chance they can hear that something’s going on in your tum. A dog’s hearing range is comparable to that of an ultrasound which is 50,000-60,000 cycles. A human’s hearing is only 20,000 cycles.

Pack hierarchy and behaviour changes

Even if you don’t realise it, things might change around your home when you’re pregnant. For example, you may come across as more vulnerable, and your partner might start to get far more protective of you. Fido can usually tell that something odd is happening to their pack, but they don’t always know what it is.
